Adding Value To A Stranger For Free

BLOG #24

A few weeks ago, a guy starting his own sports podcast followed me on Instagram and liked a few of my photos, probably with the intention of gaining another follower for his account.  So naturally I followed him back and checked out his content. Like myself, he is a young entrepreneur trying to build his brand and get his name out there. As a designer, I noticed that he didn’t have a logo for his podcast or for his social media accounts.

Immediately I realized how I could add value to a complete stranger!

That same day I sent him a direct message and offered to design his podcast a free logo.  Surprised by my free offer, he welcomed my offer with excitement. I told him I would sent him a design that week and he could do whatever he wanted with it.

That same night I ended up working on the logo until 1:30 am and sent him the design the next morning.  He was thrilled by the design and was so impressed by my work ethic and ability to create something in just one night.

Now @sebypodcast uses my design as his profile picture for his Instagram account and for his podcast on Spotify.  He gave a shout out to my logo on my his account and was extremely grateful by my willingness to help a stranger out for free.

I did not expect compensation, or anything in return.  I simple did something I enjoy to do for someone that needed more brand identity.  It was a great experience to design for a client and see it being utilized. That experience was definitely worth one night of staying up late hustling to deliver value.

You never know who you might end up working with.  Every interaction could present a possible opportunity.  Be proactive in seeking new opportunities and propose how you can create value for those people, even if it is for free.  By building that reputation, people will refer you or hire you in the future. As long as you work efficiently and timely and create value for them, your work will not go unnoticed.  Before you know it, you could have a lot of offers to do freelance work and have a side-hustle business unfolding before your very eyes!
