“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” – Dr. Suess
There will always be people looking to tear you down. People who tell you are aren’t good enough. People who tell you to play it safe. People who disagree with your beliefs and put down your passions. Those people don’t matter.
Often those are the people who truly don’t understand you. They are strangers, internet trolls, human parasites that get a thrill off being negative towards others. Hidden behind their screens, they put you down by posting a negative comment. Those people who go out of their way to get a rise out of you don’t matter. Ignore them. They aren’t worth your attention.
Surround yourself with people who don’t care what others think about them. Those are the people that matter. They are headstrong, confident, passionate, and independent. These are the people that add value to your life. They give you perspective, support and the freedom to be your true self. Keep them close. Those who are positive and authentic will give you peace of mind.
You should have no other agenda than just being yourself.
Don’t feel like you need to impress anybody. Don’t go out of your way to be someone you are not. Not only will you lose yourself, but people will identify you as someone you are not.
Often times when people move away to college or move to a new city, they believe it is a chance to start over. “I can be whoever I want to be!” Sometimes it’s nice to have a change, a chance to meet new people, a chance to rewrite your story, but NEVER forget where you came from. If you forget your roots, you will become a shell of yourself. Be thankful for the people who got you to this point in your life. Honor the people who respected your decisions to move on and start something new. Don’t forget them.
If you find yourself surrounded by negative people, change it. Befriend new people. Get to know people who are talented, successful and creative. Find people who are passionate and courageous. They will respect you for who you truly are. Find the people who MATTER.
